What do you mean when you say you want to be one sided? Are you saying that you want your texture to appear on only one face of the object? You said you created a rectangle, but I'm assuming you mean you created a rectangular box, correct?

Follow this tutorial to learn how to use the Multi/Sub-Object Material: http://www.escalight.com/tutorials/3dsmax-tutorials/creating-duck-toy-part-4.html

Try this.
Create a plane.
Right click on the plane and select object property's
In the display property's dialog box check see through.
I believe it will be visible from one direction only.

The site may have been having difficulty when you tried going there. Try it again, it works for me.

Or just Google "3DS Max Multi Sub Object tutorial". There are lots of them out there.
