I am used to being able to cancel commands by means of the Esc button; twice now, this function appears to have gone AWOL on my recently installed ACAD LT 2015. The first time it happened, Autodesk Help told me which variable to check; it has happened again and I cannot remember which one it was. Can anyone please advise?

It might have been but as that is set to 1 and the problem still persisted when I changed it to 0 (and then later back to 1) I'm guessing it must be something else. What I really don't get is how whatever it is, gets to re-set itself.

You don't happen to have an Adobe program like Photoshop or Illustrator running on this computer do you?

I have had Photoshop on my PC's for many years. Interestingly, Autodesk asked the same question. I have never experienced any compatibility issues other than slightly reduced speed of performance from AutoCAD, which I hoped that my recent change to a 64 bit computer with increased RAM, would alleviate. 
Photoshop was not running at the time that I started noticing the inability to close commands by using the Escape key. This problem is particularly acute when, having selected an object, I change my mind as to the command to be carried out; getting AutoCAD to 'let go' of the object's grips is really problematic. 
I am wondering whether a complete re-installation of the software would be the best option.

Would you replace all the tires on your car if one were flat?  I see no need to uninstall then reinstall AutoCAD.  If you go that route I would expect the problem to reappear anyway so don't waste your time.

Adobe programs are notorious for locking out the use of the ESC key for use by other programs.  I think that is what is happening here.

Are you therefore suggesting that I unload my Adobe products to resolve this issue?
My AutoCAD software has continued its march of insufferable interference - I can no longer double click on an item of text in order to edit it. The grips come up on the text showing it has been selected but that's it. Could this be from the same cause?

Well, well, well. I chose to accept that your answer to my question would probably be Yes and went ahead and uninstalled Photoshop and InDesign - and what do you know, the Escape route is now fixed; commands can be closed and grips released by the simple expedient of pressing the Esc key.
Dear John, thank you so much - got any thoughts about my text editor, which is still mis-behaving?

I would not have uninstalled either program.  I would have just kept in mind that if I used either before using AutoCAD that I would have to warm boot my computer to release Adobe's hold on the ESC key.  Once again you take the radical approach when something a little more subtle would have worked.  Why go nuclear if you don't have to?

I'll give some thought to your text editor problem.

OK...I thought about it.

My guess is it is the double click edit system variable that might need resetting.
