Some technology previews are wide-open. Others are limited. Project Play is a technology preview where you request participation. The team looks at how many slots are available and adds participants on an ongoing basis.

Project Play — the technology that powered the https://3d.si.edu/ - Smithsonian X 3D project and the latest interactive web, mobile, and VR experiences of the https://3d.si.edu/apollo11cm/index.php - digitized Apollo 11 command module , is now available as a technology preview on Autodesk Labs. Project Play is a node based WebGL authoring tool for creating real time interactive web experiences. These can be product instructions, real-time interactive presentations, or configurators, among others. They are created in the browser and can be viewed and interacted with in browsers, on mobile, or experienced through VR devices. No programming nor compilation is needed for the creators, and no installation or plug-ins are needed for the end users.

Now does that sound like something you want to play with? If so, here's how to join:

  1. Check out the http://play-docs.autodesk.com/ - documentation and  http://play-docs.autodesk.com/sample_projects/ - some small examples as inspiration for what one can do with Play to verify that Play is right for you.
  2. Request participation by joining the Autodesk Labs project: https://beta.autodesk.com/callout/?callid={1DA6AD95-71C3-4602-821D-0020282F52FC} - REQUEST PARTICIPATION .
  3. The team will consider your request.
  4. When you receive an email that you've been added to the project, go create an account on the play site itself. (The link will be in the email.)
  5. When you receive an email that your Play account has been activated, you can start playing.
  6. Once activated, visiting the site includes sample materials that you can play with.

As part of requesting participation, you fill out a short survey:

  1. What is your name?
  2. What is your quest?
  3. What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?

Just kidding. Actually, the questions are:

  1. Which industry do you come from?
  2. Please describe what kind of projects you would like to do with Play.
  3. Please provide a link to a website or your portfolio.
  4. In what platform are you interested?
  5. What software do you use today (modeling, graphics, etc.) and have you ever used Node-based software?

Your answers to these questions are what the team uses to determine if they grant your request for participation or not, so be specific in your answers.

So if you've looked at the http://play-docs.autodesk.com/ - documentation and http://play-docs.autodesk.com/sample_projects/ - samples , the next step is to join the Autodesk Labs project:
