Having modelled a house, I need to create jogged section planes at various points for elevation sections.  For some reason when I activate the live sectioning, parts of the model behind the section line are hidden.  Please help!

Hello Rob, I suppose that we are talking about 3D, OK?
There are 2 main commands for "creating" sections from a 3D solid :

SECTION that will create a real section composed of region(s) in the plan defined by 3 points without toughing your initial solid ( your command ? )

SLICE that will cut your solid in 2 with the option of keeping ( or not ) 1 of the 2 solids.
Warning : SLICE will destroy your initial solid and I do recommend to do it on a copy of it.

Eventually see my file : 3D SOLIDS 01.dwg in the CAD/BIM Blocks library here in the site.
Please tell us if this helped or not.

Are you saying that you have multiple section objects (two or more)?

"A drawing can contain multiple section objects. However, live sectioning can only be active for one section object at a time. Suppose that your model has two sections objects: Section A and Section B. If Section A has live sectioning turned on and you activate live sectioning for Section B, live sectioning for Section A is automatically turned off."
