Only Default Attribute Definition used in Field Formula Calculation

I am trying to create a dynamic block which draws a ruler which counts starting from from a user input number, provided by an attribute definition. The problem it seem is that the field only ever considers the default value for the attribute definition, and ignores the user inputted value.

 

Help Please! I can't figure this one out.
