Ok so I am having some serious issues when I am trying to edit a drawing in AutoCAD civil 3D. I do not have a lot of experience with autocad (10 weeks give or take at work) and I am the most experienced person in the office with regards to AutoCAD unfortunately.

I was given a set of plans to edit with the majority of the edits on xrefs. However whenever I try to open the xref in the drawing I get two messages one reads "The Xref selected references a previous drawing file format. Edits saved back to the Xref file will be in the release format of the referenced drawing file" and then this error message "FATAL ERROR: Unhandled Access Violation Reading 0x0000 Exception at 594d7369h." I have tried to audit the original design plans that were xrefed separately and errors where found but autocad can only correct half of them. Autocad won't even let me save the errors that it did correct when it ran audit. I also tried to run audit on a few other files in this particular project folder with similar results but also some have no errors.

I can make corrections in the xrefed file when I open it as a separate drawing and save the drawing and the edits appear wherever the drawing is xrefed but I feel that the problem should be fixed rather then putting in time into a project only to have it not work later on for some cascading reason.

This is just a side note and I don't know if it means anything, but a month ago when the server was being backed up many of the the files that had been worked on (the project noted above and other projects) were re-saved all at the exact same time even though I did not manual save any of these drawings. I don't know if this contributed to the file problem or not, just an odd coincidence. None of the other files that were randomly re-saved have any issues that I can tell.

My best guess is that it is a program issue but I honestly have no idea. Thank you for any help or insight that you can give me. If you have any questions or need me to clarify anything I'll do my best in that regard.

I had that same problem happen to me when we moved from LDD 2004 to Civil 3D 2008 in the beginning.  The only way I have found to fix it on an X-ref is to detach the xref and re attach it. This will update all links to the drawing to the newest Autodesk product.
