Hey,

I couldn't really think how to title this, but basically, I have seen add-ons for CAD (I don't have a great knowledge, I'm a civil engineering student with some CAD experience) where you can just click a button and it will insert a standard I-beam.

Last year as part of a summer job, I assembled a grid of all the standard drawings they used in highways, with a corresponding spreadsheet so they could just go in and copy the drawing they need into their current drawing.

I am lucky enough to be going back to the same department this summer and I'd quite like to take this idea a bit further by adding something similar to the thing I described previously, like if they clicked a kerbs button then they'd get a selection of standard kerbs and then it'd just insert that drawing.

There are 2 minor flaws in that I have no idea how it's done, if it's difficult, and I have no idea how to find out.

Could someone give me some advice as to where I'd find out about this kind of thing?

here at the company I work for they have that set-up on the Structural side I will see if I can make a breakdown of exactly what is needed (Macro wise) and such to see if I can get you pointed in the right direction. Might take me a day or two to get back to you on this forum.

If you are talking about AutoCAD (I will move the thread to a proper forum), you can use a simple menu macro with a predefined [CMD]_-INSERT[/CMD] command or visual solution using AutoCAD Tool palettes.

Thanks guys, the tool pallet worked perfectly, I'm using CAD 2010 so I'm hoping it'll look similar on the version they have in the office (I think 2006 or 2004)
