Saving in older AutoCAD file format

I just have a quick question. I've been using 2010 version for a while and I wonder what would be the disadvantages (if any) if we started saving our AutoCAD drawings automatically in older format, like 2007 or 2004. Some people outside that don't have new Acad have issues with new format, converting etc...
Would we have to sacrifice using any of the new features?

I assume not if your using an earlier version, you wont loose any utility.

But by doing that, (using 2010 to make 07) each time you open a file it will drag while it updates to current format each time, every time you load an old format drawing. VERY annoying!!
 
I have to save as an earliler version for some customers (ex- R12.dxf).
But I make a copy each time, so I dont have to open up that old file again.

 Everybody in the office is using 2010 version, but because of some outside people there is a need to save in older format. I'll try to stay away from making it a rule, I want to keep saving in new 2010 format , but I just wanted to know what would be the drawback for us.
Thanks for the info on that annoying updating.

For those outside I have news, DWG True View has a utility for converting between the file formats and it's free.

i meant if YOU were using like....2004 and someone else was using the 2010... then youd obviously loose out.

but yeah, if you guys are all using 2010, and some fool customer is running R14 cause there too small or scared to upgrade, dont sacrafice your workspace in there name, lol, go ahead and upgrade em' all!!

OP what format does your office save in now? There's not that much time lag in saving to 2007 format, so I'd advise setting that office-wide. However, I know in my case that with SAVEFIDELITY turned on (converts annotative objects to multiple objects for users of 2006 or older), there's a huge time lag whenever saving etc. I'd say turn SAVEFIDELITY off for normal operations, but only turn it on for those occasions when you have to send your drawings to the outside people who are on 2006 or older (then turn it off again of course)...

Right now we save in 2010 format, and we use annotative dimensioning or other new features, I'd like to use more of parametric features as well. I guess I'll just test the lag between saving in 2010 and 2007 and we'll see. I wouldn't want to go any further past 2007, not an option, it's not exactly "evolution" :-)
