object dimensions while creating

I Can' find how to activate the function that show the dimensions of object, solids, while creating in modelling environment.
you know, when create a solid starting from one point and dragging the cursor, it is supposed that the two dimension on the plane are shown and is possible to see how big is what you are creating.
this function was always present in my models, and suddenly, after a system crash disappeared.
somebody can help me for to reactivate it?
