I am an architect with more than 10 years of work experience in the United States.  CAD systems and more recently sketchup has been a part of my everyday work.  Recently, I devised a tool to be used in CAD or in sketchup applications.  It is quite innovative and it opens new ways to navigate through complex architectural projects.  Ideally I want to share my invention and keep royalties from sales.  However, I do not know the industry and do not know where to start.  I thought on patenting it but the process for it seems complex and I am not sure it would cover me or if the industry is used to paying for ideas.  Can anyone point me on the right direction to research about this?

Thanks,

Alejandro Gonzalez
