How do you change the units that the area command displays its calc. Depending what units I am using it always comes up with either sq/in or sq/mm. How do I get it to change to sq/ft or sq/meters?

The square footage is displayed right after square inches isn't it?
If you really need something that lists Square Feet, Square Meters and Square Yards in architectural, decimal, or metric scale I know of a lisp routine that will do just that.  The routine also lists Acres and Hectares too.

No it lists sq/inches and then total length of perimeter. I can and have done the math its just another step
I was hoping there was a preference setting that I was just not finding.

It only does that Faboo if your units are set to decimal.  Set them to architectural and the square inches will be followed by square feet.  I know...I have 2007 running on another computer at this very moment.  Check it.  I'll wait.

No, I went to 2 drawings one that was set to decimal and the other that was already set to arch. and made sure that both of them were set to architectural and I still get sq/in and perimeter. Is there a preference setting that I am missing?

It must be your "foreign" version of AutoCAD.  Like I said I can see it on my second screen (AutoCAD 2007) right now and my drawing, set in architectural units, shows square inches, square feet and then perimeter.
Maybe you better consider the lisp routine I mentioned.
