I don't know what happened but before some setting was changed when in realistic shade mode objects that were transparent looked clear as glass, you could just see thru them, but now they have a pattern or small t's or x's on them which makes it hard to see the parts underneath?

Sounds like a graphics card problem.  Have you been messing around with the Manual Tune option of 3Dconfig?
