Hi all,

So I consider myself rather proficient at CAD, my CAD teacher... not so much. He claims that you cannot xref out of folders outside of the folder in which the drawing x-ref'ed into is contained. I've worked at numerous firms where we xref from a server and my file structure has always xref'ed out of a different folder.

I want to show him how to do it properly so that he stops giving me crappy grades for (and i quote) "don't do it because I don't know how to do it.

THANK YOU!!!!

You can xref from any folder on your computer or server. The xref does not have to be inside the folder where your drawing is. But it's really not a very good idea, IMO, because if you grab the folder containing your drawing and stick it on a flash drive and take it home, or stick it on your laptop to take on a trip, any xrefs that are not inside that folder will not come along for the ride.

Also, if someone revises, renames or deletes the xref in the other folder, it's going to affect your drawing as well.

I always keep all files that are relevant to the project in the project folder.
