This has just happened yesterday and it is quiet annoying.

First of all I am running AutoCAD 2010. It used to be (and was on every other version of AutoCAD I've ever used) whenever I selected an object the layer it was on came up in the Layers tool bar and when I right clicked with something selected it would bring up the "edit" shortcut menu. Now, it wont show the layer the object is on in the Layers toolbar (not in Mechanical Classic at least. It will in regular mechanical) nor will it bring up the edit menu. It almost acts as if nothing is selected. Even when I press the delete key when something is selected it doesn't do anything yet I can edit the drawing and all so its not like I'm somehow in a "Read Only" file or something. What would you guys suggest I look into to fix this? Its REALLY annoying!

Have you made edits to any system variables lately?  Downloaded and used any custom lisp routines that may have been so poorly written that they failed to reset system variables to their original values after the routine has run?

You did check your right-click menu choices in Options right?

Did you make any edits to your CUIx?

The only things that have been installed on this computer have been the normal Windows updates and an AutoDesk fix to remedy the crash when using the distance tool. I've checked the options in the "user Preference" tab but they all seem to be correct. Ive looked through the CUI menu also and dont really see anything that seems incorrect in there either. Is there anything in particular in either one of those areas that I should maybe look for?

You still cannot right-click and bring up the edit shortcut menu?

No. When I right click it brings up the default menu. The same menu that comes up when nothing is selected. And, if there is something selected and I click on a command, it makes me re-select the items as if they were never selected in the first place.

And you've checked your system variables?

I suppose you could try running the REPAIR option.

How did this problem happen in the first place?  What were you tweaking?

Maybe it's your mouse?

Did you consider my suggestion to run the REPAIR option?

Sorry, I was away on Vacation this weekend. The right mouse button works and all, the program just doesnt bring up the edit menu when I click it and the program acts as if nothing is selected when I click on an edit short-cut. I have to re-select everything then the edit function will work.

That's the weirdest thing about all this John, I didnt touch a single thing with the program when it happened. I just came back into work the next day and this is how it was acting and my virus scan hasnt caught anything either.

Im going to try to repair option today if I can find the CD. If not tomorrow. In the mean time, CAD Library, it would be great to hear how you fixed this issue.

I don't think it has anything to do with a virus.  Most likely it was a rogue lisp routine.

Just to verify, you went through Options > User Preferences > Windows Standard Behavior and enabled Short cut menus in drawing area right?  Did you change anything in Right-click Customization?

Ya, I made sure that was still enabled and all. And I didnt change anything in the right click customization until after all this started.

Guess you have two choices then.

1. Edit the CUIx.

2. Do a REPAIR.

Just a wild guess...
Check your PICKFIRST system variable. It should be 1. If yours is set to 0, I guess that's what caused it...
