Re-imagining Design and Manufacturing in the future

Tatjana DzambazovaTatjana Dzambazova http;//usa.autodesk.com - Autodesk Sr. Product Manager and Maker Extraordinaire hosted two live Master Class sessions at http://conferences.ted.com/TED2012/ - TED 2012 Monday this week titled “RIP MOD FAB Re-imagining Design and Manufacturing in the future.

RIP It
From analog to digital: Using Reality Capture technologies like laser scanning and photogrammetry using http://www.123dapp.com/catch - Autodesk 123D Catch down to micro sensors and DNA sequencing.

Examples: digital historic preservation, education and access to scientific research such as paleontologist Louise Leakey captured important hominid and fauna fossils to 3D digital models for everyone to explore on http://www.africanfossils.org - AfricanFossils.org , real live measurement of energy performance of buildings, or just for fun.

MOD It
Modifying of digitized data (analysis, simulation) and the revolution that infinite computing brings.

FAB It
From digital back to analog: Discussed various democratized fabrication methods, laser cutting and 3d printing and the power it brings to anyone creative to participate in the creation of the world around us.

Examples: Laser cutting designs and prototypes for work, education, art or for fun. 3D printing objects, food, homes, bio printing and DNA printing, art, or just for fun.

Workshop material: Introduced http://www.123dapp.com/make - Autodesk 123D Make that takes any 3D digital model and produces a vector, laser cut pattern that can construct that 3D model out of flat parts.

Attendees were then gathered around the machines such as the http://www.makerbot.com/ - MakerBot , http://www.faro.com/ - FARO Laser Scanner, http://www.nextengine.com/ - NEXTEngine scanner, http://www.epiloglaser.com/ - Epilog laser cutter where they received instructions about the machines, as well as instructions about the provided assembly kits that they grabbed to take and make themselves after TED.

Some of the kits

Cardboard Hominid SkullMagazine RackMirror Cardboard Rhino     Cardboard Venus Head    Acrylic Bowl

Attendees also received a Headphone Wrap creation by post grad student Alex Wall sponsored by http://www.ponoko.com/ - Ponoko .
