calculate cut and fill material quantities

hi.
is there an easy way to calculate (better to say let the program calculate) cut and fill quantities from polylines?
i want to get something like a 3dmodel / volume based on contour lines (each contour line is made of several polylines that are not joined an have gaps in between. but they are on the correct level / z coordinates).
one volume for the existing and one for the designed landscape...
in the end i need all the cut material seperated from the fill-material.
last time (when i used autocad not map3d) i had to join all the polylines into one closed polyline (=one contour line)to get the area. and do this for each contour line and so on...
a lot of work which i hope is several klicks with map3d...
i am also thankful for links. i didnt find anything useful or didnt search for the right words...
