Q - question

How to quickly record a video from a CAD application or other Windows program? (replacing Screencast)

A - answer From any application window in Windows (incl. web browser, AutoCAD, Inventor, Revit, 3ds Max, Fusion 360...) you can record a video of the window content in the MP4 format - both graphical and audio (system) content, thanks to the built-in function in Windows 10 or 11. All this for free and without installing any additional application. So you can use it as an alternative to the obsoleted Autodesk Screencast. Just enable the "Xbox Game Bar" feature. You can enable it in the Windows settings, see Win+I > Gaming > Xbox Game Bar (Enable).

You can start recording by pressing the key combination Win+Alt+R (as "Record") and stop it by clicking the button on the displayed "game" panel, or by pressing Win+Alt+R again.

The recorded video with the captured activity of the application (window), in the resolution of the window, is saved in a .MP4 video file, in the folder:

C:\Users\USERNAME\Videos\Captures\,

resp.

%USERPROFILE%\videos\captures (Films)

The individual recordings have filenames similar to this one:

Autodesk AutoCAD 2023 - [Drawing1.dwg] 2022-10-18 17-52-48.mp4

- so generally: app_name - [window_name] date_yyyy-mm-dd time_hh-mm-ss.mp4.

You can then edit the recorded video using standard editing tools or upload it to YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook, Sharepoint, etc.

The entire game panel with additional options, e.g. with the last 30 sec. of the application's activity recorded retroactively, can be found by pressing Win+G.

You cannot record Windows Desktop or Explorer this way. This can be bypassed by running it in a virtual machine window.
