Q - question

What is the difference between GROUP and HOST_GROUP in a FlexNet option file?

A - answer The Autodesk License Manager (FlexLM/FlexNet) allows to define reservation and limiting rules for users and user groups. To define a group you can use the option keywords GROUP and HOST_GROUP. How do they differ?

The GROUP option refers to user groups (links with user/login names), while HOST_GROUP refers to computer groups (links with machine names, resp. with their IP addresses).

Examples:

GROUP Designers JohnB JackS TomP CharlesD
HOST_GROUP Development HPWSZ1 DellNote2 LenovoWS3
RESERVE 3 86131PDSP_2014_0F GROUP Designers
RESERVE 2 86081MAXDES_2014_0F HOST_GROUP Development
Means: reserve at least 3 licenses of Product Design Suite 2014 for our designers (Johny, Jackie, Tom and Charlie) and at least 2 licenses of 3ds Max Design 2014 for workstations in the development department
