Ok, a friend has been helping build a computer and this is what we came up with. The two versions are like my past thread, AMD and Intel. I plan to run Civil 3D on this comp and maybe some other 3D programs in the future and while I know that the Intel seems to be the best I am also looking for some feedback on how you think the AMD would stand up to it.Comp 1:Extra Case Fan Upgrade: Maximum 120MM Case Cooling Fans for your selected case [+9] Noise Reduction Technology: None Power Supply Upgrade: 600 Watts Power Supplies (SLI Ready Power Supply) CPU: AMD Phenom™II X4 925 Quad-Core CPU w/ HyperTransport Technology [+80] Cooling Fan: XtremeGear Ultra Triple Heatpipes Cool Copper Heatsink CPU Cooling Fan (Extreme Silent at 20dBA & Overclock Proof) [+8] Motherboard: Asus M4A78LT-M LE AM3 DDR3 AMD 760G/SB710 Chipset DDR3 mATX w/ Integrated ATI Radeon 3000, 7.1 HD Audio, GbLAN, USB2.0, SATA-II RAID, 1 Gen2 PCIe, 1 PCIe X1 & 2 PCI Memory: 4GB (2GBx2) PC1333 DDR3 PC3 10666 Dual Channel Memory (Corsair or Major Brand) Video Card: ATI Radeon HD 4670 1GB DDR3 PCI-Express DVI-I & TVO [+4] (Major Brand Powered by ATI) Video Card 2: None Dedicated PHYSX Card: None Multiple Video Card Settings: Non-SLI/Non-CrossFireX Mode Supports Multiple Monitors Hard Drive: Single Hard Drive (500GB SATA-II 3.0Gb/s 16MB Cache 7200RPM HDDData Hard Drive: Single Hard Drive [+44] (320GB SATA-II 3.0Gb/s 16MB Cache 7200RPM HDDHard Drive Cooling Fan: None Operating System: Microsoft® Windows® 7 Home Premiumand Comp 2:Extra Case Fan Upgrade: Maximum 120MM Case Cooling Fans for your selected case [+9] Noise Reduction Technology: None Power Supply Upgrade: 600 Watts Power Supplies ] (SLI Ready Power Supply) CPU: Intel® Core™ i7-920 2.66 GHz 8M L3 Cache LGA1366 Venom Boost Fast And Efficient Factory Overclocking: No Overclocking Cooling Fan: XtremeGear HP-1216X Five Heatpipes Direct Core Contact Copper Heatsink CPU Cooling Fan (Extreme Silent at 20dBA & Overclock Proof) (Extreme Silent at 20dBA & Overclock Proof)(Venom Boost Extreme OC Certified)Motherboard: (3-Way SLI Support) MSI X58 Pro-E Intel X58 Chipset SLI/CrossFire DDR3 Mainboard Memory: 6GB (2GBx3) PC1333 DDR3 PC3 10666 Triple Channel Memory [+55] (Corsair or Major Brand) Video Card: ATI Radeon HD 4670 1GB DDR3 PCI-Express DVI-I & TVO [+43] (Major Brand Powered by ATI) Video Card 2: None Video Card 3: None Dedicated PHYSX Card: None Multiple Video Card Settings: Non-SLI/Non-CrossFireX Mode Supports Multiple Monitors Hard Drive: Single Hard Drive (500GB SATA-II 3.0Gb/s 16MB Cache 7200RPM HDD) Data Hard Drive: Single Hard Drive (320GB SATA-II 3.0Gb/s 16MB Cache 7200RPM HDDHard Drive Cooling Fan: None Network: ADDITIONAL PCI 32 BIT 10/100 NETWORK CARDExtra Thermal Display: None Wireless 802.11B/G Network Card: PCI Wireless 802.11g 54Mbps Network Interface CardOperating System: Microsoft® Windows® 7 Home PremiumAny input is appreciated. I've used AMD for some time. Nowadays, Intel Dual Core.

I prefer Intel.

Both builds look well built.

I struggle at work everyday because my boss insists on buying Dells. So tonight (and most Nights) I had to bring a project home with me because I could not plot PDF, DWF, PLT,or actual Paper without dropping layers or fatal error. My home system chugs right though these problems in fractions of a second no errors. Its getting to the point at work that i can't trim or pedit a golf course sized 3D map file without sending an email to AutoDesk about how 09 just puked on me. what system components do you think are the most important?

My home system:
    * Processor: Intel Q9450 Core 2 Quad 333x8
    * Motherboard: Gigabyte X48-DQ6
    * Memory: Mushkin XP2 Redline 8000 2 x 2GB 5-5-5-12
    * Video Cards: 2(xfire) Visiontek HD 4870
    * Power Supply: Zalman 1Kw Modular power supply
    * Hard Drive: 1 Seagate 1TB SATA 7500 rpm
    * Optical Drive: LG 20x DVD+/-RW
    * OS: Windows Vista Ultimate Edition (I know, I'm just waiting on the next sys failure to drop 7 on there)
    * 4 GB readyboost
    * Antec 1200 with enough fans to orbit a small     Coloradan kid

At the time it was the state but I cant convince my boss he needs a gaming rig at the office.

thanks

Sorry, I tried to hijack your thread. I thought I was posting my own. My current understanding is that best of the best CPU, MB chip sets, RAM, and cooling for those things yield the most bang for buck in a CAD workstation. however the only reason I was reading your post was that I was looking for answers too. I am no expert. My home rig crushes Map 3D '10 files that I wait endlessly on at work. Your new rig specs beat my 2 year old specs on my home hot rod even with my over clocking and mine gives me no problems with huge drawings.

good Luck
