3D models imported into Inventor from neutral data exchange file formats (STEP, IGES, SAT) are "dumb" models without the original design features (holes, fillets...).

In Inventor there is only a limited set of editing functions available to edit such models (right-click on the "Base1" item in the Inventor browser). But you can use the new "Feature Recognition" add-on module for Inventor 11 and 2008 - currently available as a technology preview on labs.autodesk.com. The Feature Recognition module performs an automatic or semi-automatic recognition of design features (hole, extrude, fillet...) in 3D models imported from exchange formats.
