There are several possible causes for an empty (black) rendering output.

Besides a trivial problem - an empty scene (with no renderable 3D objects or faces), the most common cause is a missing or inadequate illumination (lighting). Add light sources to your scene - the command LIGHT, the Sun or enable the default illumination. Also use the RPREF command to enable indirect lighting (the bulb icon next to the "Global illumination" parameter). Or switch to a different preset render quality - in the same palette.

Other causes may be the missing or damaged material library (the shared Autodesk library), insufficient memory, or an incompatible graphics card.
