Q - question

How to replace an internal block with an external reference?

A - answer If you have a frequently updated block in your drawing, or if a block is to be used in other drawings (e.g. a drawing legend), it might be benefical to reference it as an external block - i.e. a xref.

You can easily replace a block with a xref (external reference) using the BLOCKTOXREF command from Express Tools. First save your internal block to a separate DWG file using the WBLOCK command. Then run BLOCKTOXREF, select the internal block and pick the recently created DWG file. This command will perform replacements of all references found in the current drawing. It will also prompt for purging of unused block definitions.
