The AutoCAD command LAYOFF (former Express Tools command) can either freeze or just switch off the selected layer when used in viewports.

You can set its behaviour through the settings option: LAYOFF > Settings > Viewports: off/freeze. In both cases, the layer will disappear, but frozen and switched off layers behave differently in many cases.
