Q - question

4 methods of 3D orbit in Inventor, with specified pivot.

A - answer The orbit function (3D view rotation) is one of the most common operations when creating and editing models of parts and assemblies. The standard commands to invoke a 3D orbit, the F4 key and Shift+mousewheel), are using the default center pivot point in the center of gravity of the model.

If you want to rotate your design along a different pivot point, you can use these four basic procedures.

  1. F4 (or the function Orbit from the Steering Wheel panel on the right, or the ribbon View > Navigate > Orbit - keep the F4 key pressed and mouse-click shortly on the new pivot point - the center of the orbit circle will move to this point and then you can normally mouse-drag to orbit your model around this pivot point. The selected point must lie within the area of the original circle - if it is far away, make the pivot selection gradually, several times.
  2. Steering Wheel, the panel Steering Wheel - click on the wheel "Full navigation", mouse-drag its internal top left quadrant "Center" to the point of the new pivot and use Shift+mousewheel to orbit, zoom, etc.
  3. Preselect point - click on any element of the model and the use Shift+mousewheel to start orbit - it will use the preselected element or point as the pivot point (the most convenient method). In assemblies with subassemblies, it may be necessary to use Part priority, or Faces and edges priority (see the QAT panel).
  4. 3D mouse - of course the most ergonomic and productive method for 3D orbit of models. The option Track Selection (TrackSelection in Registry) specifies the behaviour of the pivot point.
