CAD tip # 6475:
Question
A
AutoCAD entities (objects) grouped in a block can have two special properties: BYBLOCK (by block) and BYLAYER (by layer). These properties influence how the entity will be displayed when the block is inserted (referenced) in a drawing. You can use these values for the color, linetype, linewidth and plot style properties.
- The BYLAYER setting for block components means - inherit the properties from the layer the block is inserted in.
- The BYBLOCK setting for block components means - inherit the properties from the properties of the block (the block reference/insertion).
So if you have e.g. a block inserted in the layer LAY (colored green) and you assign it (Ctrl+1) the color red, a line (in the block) with the color BYLAYER will be green and a line with the color BYBLOCK will be red.
Please note that the property names are localized in non-English AutoCAD versions. So it could be e.g. VONLAYER and VONBLOCK (German), DUCALQUE and DUBLOC (French), DLEHLAD and DLEBLOK (Czech).
