Topic: CAD not opening excel links Posted: 15.Mar.2012 at 20:56 |

You have set up an automatic link to Excel from AutoCAD in a drawing, everytime you open that drawing, AutoCAD connects and updates, if someone has the drawing open AutoCAD cannot update, but must wait until the Excel file is not Read Only and other user is logged out. No problems, AutoCAD just did everything you have asked it to do. Either live with it or break the link and update manually, or look into setting up a "Shared Workbook" in Excel. In Excel 2007 look under "Review" for "Shared Workbook" and help or office assistant to set up.

When I talk about a hyperlink I mean just that. I am not talking about "paste special" and "paste link".

What version of AutoCAD and what version of Excel? You will need to sever the link and manually update. The reason you do not notice this when no one has the file open is, it updates and continues on. There should be a setting in Excel to allow multiple access with out a read only message, you might try that.To sever the link _OLELINKS then select the object in the list, then click the [Break Link] button. |

Well that's a new one on me. Never had any problem like it although I use hyperlinks very sparingly.
Does this happen in all drawings that have a hyperlink to an Excel spreadsheet?

By "Hyperlink" I think you mean using "paste special" and "paste link". Right?? If yes. It happens to everyone here.

So AutoCAD, without any input from you, will attempt to open the file that you have hyperlinked to?

Yes. When I open the DWG in CAD, it will try and open any Excel file that has been linked that someone is using.
*EDIT* The problem is if someone is using the file you get a dialog that asks you to open it read only, notify, or cancel. Many times that dialog box takes a long time to show up.

Wouldn't you have to sever the link somehow?

Im not sure why that would need to be done. Excel dosent open when someone is not in it. Why does it try to open Excel when someone is in it? That seems to be an awful feature.
