If I open a DWG file and it has a excel link in it, and someone else has the Excel file open, CAD will open the Excel file also and lock up my computer until the dialog box in excel is clicked. Is there any way to stop CAD from opening excel??
It dosent do this if nobody is in the Excel file.

Wouldn't you have to sever the link somehow?

Im not sure why that would need to be done. Excel dosent open when someone is not in it. Why does it try to open Excel when someone is in it? That seems to be an awful feature.

Yes. When I open the DWG in CAD, it will try and open any Excel file that has been linked that someone is using.
*EDIT* The problem is if someone is using the file you get a dialog that asks you to open it read only, notify, or cancel. Many times that dialog box takes a long time to show up.

Well that's a new one on me. Never had any problem like it although I use hyperlinks very sparingly.
Does this happen in all drawings that have a hyperlink to an Excel spreadsheet?

By "Hyperlink" I think you mean using "paste special" and "paste link". Right?? If yes. It happens to everyone here.

What version of AutoCAD and what version of Excel? You will need to sever the link and manually update. The reason you do not notice this when no one has the file open is, it updates and continues on. There should be a setting in Excel to allow multiple access with out a read only message, you might try that. To sever the link _OLELINKS then select the object in the list, then click the [Break Link] button.

We cant break the links as they are updated by others. Thats part of the problem lol
