Import the iges file into Autocad (igesin command or use the insert menu).  Save it as a dwg.  Then open the dwg in Inventor - however, when you're at the open file interface, select the file type as an Autocad dwg (not the Inventor dwg), then using options (button next to open), choose the import option not the open option, then click on open button (it sounds confusing I know).  Now IV will take you through a dialogue box and generally it creates 2 files, one an idw and one being either an ipt or an iam.

Voila!

Hope this helps.

To convert a transparent iges model you have to go through the grueling procedure of promoting surfaces to solids and stitching it all together again.

Oh dear god!  Yeah I dont even know where to start on promoting surfaces, way beyond what I know how to do.

However I dont necessarily need to break the part into pieces.

What would work the best for me would be this:

-How to I take the .igs and convert the flat surface views in to a DWG that I can open in AutoCAD 2010 Pro.  I have to take these models and turn them into 2D CAD build order sheets for prototype production.

I am running really short on time and you guys are the only forum that has even posted a reply to my question. (which I think is really sh*tty).

Anyway I need to know how to do that more than anything else, since I have very little time before I have to have this part ready, could somebody please help me with this issue.

Thanks,

Stephen

Hey everyone,

this is my first post and I would like to start off by saying hey to everyone and thanks for this great source of information!

I am having in a problem with a file that a large client of mine sent me via "yousendit" in a .igs format.

When I open it with Inventor 2010 Pro, the part is all yellow and semi-transparent.  I have tried everything that I know of to change it into a standard viewing format but I cant get anything to work.  Google was no help either.

I am not a big Inventor user so any solutions you can offer please act like your talking with a 10 year old! lol  Again I am a total Autodesk Inventor Pro Newb! Confused

Thanks in advance for any help any of you can offer!!!

-Stephen

Try to save as any other format and open again with Inventor.
