Hello, I don't know about 3ds max and Maya but if you can't open DWG directly, I'd try to "save as" your DWG file in AutoCAD to a "DXF" file.
DXF means Drawing eXchange Format.
In any case, in your 3ds max or Maya look for the formats that you can open directly.
From AutoCAD to Solidworks or ProE, I use the .sat of .igs.
Please let us know how and if you have solved your problem.
