AutoCAD 2011 (and higher) offers enhanced options for selecting subobjects in complex 3D scenes. A new system variable CULLINGOBJ controls the highlighting and selection of 3D objects (and faces or edges) which are hidden (invisible) in the current view:

Grip selection, CULLINGOBJ=0 Grip selection, CULLINGOBJ=1

The first image shows the default behavior in AutoCAD 2010 (or when CULLINGOBJ is switched to 0), the second image shows the default behavior in AutoCAD 2011. You can see similar object culling also for rollover highlighting.

The CULLINGOBJSELECTION variable similarly controls the selection of objects which are hidded from view in the current scene. By setting it to 1, the window-selection will filter out objects which are "not visible" (are obscured by another object). This setting can be risky in some situations.
