One of undocumented new features in Inventor version 2016 is support of STEP format in the AP242 standard (STEP protocol 242).

Inventor 2016 can import STEP (.stp) files in the standard AP203, AP214 and now also in AP242 (geometry). You can also export STEP files in the AP242 protocol using the command Save copy as - in the dialog "Save copy as", click on the Option button and in the Option dialog choose the required protocol - "242 - Managed model based 3D engineering":

242, compressed

And you can also use the option "Compress STEP file" to store (export) compressed STEP files (.STPZ extension). The same zipped format can be also imported.
