AutoCAD 2007 (and higher) previews the selected objects (hoover) by thickening the objects under cursor.

If you are slowed down by this function in large drawings (e.g. on cycling of overlapping objects), you can switch to the classic entity highlighting with dashed lines -- set the PREVIEWEFFECT variable to 0 (the default value is 2). You can also set this value using the dialog Options > Selection > Visual effects > Selection preview. With the "Advanced options" button you can exclude some complex (slow) object types (e.g. xrefs, mtexts, tables) from the selection preview.
