You might ask the *.dwg author to send you the file in an earlier version.
 
Although using 05 and 07, I save to 2000 for my clients, if I feel so inclined to send the *.dwg file.

Maybe its still referencing a file from 08'?

You cant open up a newer file with an older version of Autocad.
Sounds like you need to open up the 08' file and downgrade it to 04', then reload it into an 04 dwg to open it in o4'.
Hope that made sense, lol.

Hi
I have an Autocad 2008 file with xref connected, i need to saved it as a Autocad file 2004LT.
wend i save as 2004 LT  file it will work if i open the file in 2008 but it dont work if i open the file with Autocad 2004.
