If the dwg file is stored on a server somewhere, depending on the server O/S, it may create backups, like with Microsoft Server 2003, and if so, then you can try to right click on the dwg file, go to properties, and the (if it's there) Previous Versions tab.
If something there shows up, you can copy or overwrite (I suggest copy, don't want to trash what you have left of the original)
Don't know what other operating systems support that option.

You don't backup your CAD files to another media like a flash drive, CD or DVD? Are you on a network or a standalone computer?

i don't know that's the weird part.... i save inside the block editor as i couldn't close it don't know why. I know that if its an external reference or if u're editing the block in place u won't be able to save the file, but from the block editor you can. so i saved and closed autocad as i seemed to have problems. when i reopened the file all it had in it was the block i was working on and it had moved itself as an exploded block in model space (it was inserted in the paper space / layout) and in the layout it is still a block. In the layout i have all my viewports but now with empty content since the model only has the paper block.

You were editing a block. The block has its own name. Therefore, how did AutoCAD save the drawing under the block name?

OK, that was weird. You may already lost your drawing. Your only option is the backup file, but you don't have them too. It looks like AutoCAD save your block as your drawing.

Were you by any chance editing an xref in place when this happened?
