Longbow would be your best option in my opinion then.

There is no free version.  What version of Windows are you using?  Example: Windows XP Professional or Windows 7 Home Premium.

What version of Windows 7 do you have installed?  Is it Home Premium by any chance?  If so, then you can run AutoCAD 2008 (32-bit) on your 64-bit computer only if you utilize a program called Longbow Converter.

Well technically it is possible to install 32-bit software on a computer that uses a 64-bit OS.  I know it because I've done it on two computers.  I have AutoCAD 2004 (32-bit) running on one computer that runs Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.  I have AutoCAD 2007 running on another computer that has Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit as the OS.

You might want to look into a program called Longbow.

BTW...if you have a 64-bit OS try taking a look at your folders using Windows Explorer.  Do you see a folder named Programs (x86)?  If you do, that is where Windows places any 32-bit program you load.

It is slow in 2D as well?  Was it a 64-bit version?
