how do I go about finding out if the arrowheads are blocks?

The LIST command, or pick on one, right-click and pick Properties and see whether it says Block Reference at the top, or put (entget (car (entsel))) in the Command: line, hit Enter, and see whether what comes up includes (0 . "INSERT").
