Upload one of the problematic drawings and I'll take a look at it then tell you what I see or don't see.

I can switch views until the end of time and neither the color nor the material disappears. Perhaps you have an under-performing graphics card.

I've used both methods. It just depends on whether I started a new drawing (Save) or made use of a pre-existing drawing where I do NOT want to overwrite the file (SAVEAS).
What visual style is being used?

How are you saving? Save as or just save?

And what procedure are you following? Given the work I do I rarely, if ever, use materials yet my inexperience did not prevent me from applying a material to a 3DFace which I haven't done in a very long time.

An example of a color and a material applied to one 3DFace on a solid 3D model. New drawing created then saved. Drawing was then closed and reopened. Both the color on one 3DFace of the square and the material on one 3DFace of the rectangle were retained (i.e. - they never disappeared between saving and reopening the drawing).

You keep changing your story. First it was materials applied to a 3DFace, then color now you are back to materials.
Let's talk about color. Are you using the Color Faces command found on the Home tab > Solid Editing panel? If not please explain the procedure you are using to apply the color.
