I was wondering if I might be able to get some help.. My company is currently looking at the way Drawing Revions are done. We work with
Architectural and Electrical Drawings.

I was hoping to find out what other companies do.

What do you do as far as your file structure? Do you just keep with the original file name, no matter what revision? Do you keep a copy of the original (or previous revision)? If you do how do you manage this?

hiya, I just saw your post about dwg revs. I have recently moved to a company and bn here about 6 months. The way we do things here is better than my last company in some respects. We have individual folders for each project and within these folders we have the following individual folders;
Current
Superceded
Architects
Xrefs

When we receive a drawing from the architect it gets saved into the architects folder and the file dated on the day it was electronically received.

We the save this drawing as our own into the Xref folder where we 'clean' it up and get rid of any unneccesaries.

After this we obviously create a dwg and import the xref and it will remain in our current folder until we get a new xref from the architect with new changes on. Obviously when a new layout come in we save the original drawing as a later revision and the first dwg will go into the superceded folder (don't forget to bind xrefs otherwise things can get confusing on a big job.)

We have issues for tender, tender clarifications and construction. The way I am used to now is

Job no/Discipline (elec or mech etc), cad dwg no (01,02) and then the rev in the title block.

Sorry so long winded! wonder if it may help at all? I'm on a quiet period at work and thought to register on here to learn from people but also share my knowledge where I can

:)

Here in my job we do this: there is a DOC file with all the filename codes in the project, and every code is unique.
The DWG files have this format of filename:
DE-4719.02-862-ASX-008=0.dwg
Every code on the filename have a meaning, like "4719" is the currently project, "862" is from where the money is coming to execute that specific drawing...and the list goes on....
As revisions are made in the project, we simply change the revision in the filename AND in the drawing, like: DE-4719.02-862-ASX-008=A.dwg
But the revisions are fully controled by that DOC file that says all the changes made to every file, who e when changed it, and to where the file is gonna be sent.

DE-4719.02-862-ASX-008=0.dwg
DE-4719.02-862-ASX-008=A.dwg
DE-4719.02-862-ASX-008=B.dwg
DE-4719.02-862-ASX-008=C.dwg

In the company's network, only the last revision appears, the old revisions are moved to a folder called "Old" in the same place where the actual revision is.
Many times we had to recover files from the "old" folder, so it's important to keep your old revisions.
