Q - question

Importing points from a Shape file as symbols/blocks mapped to object data.

A - answer Using mapping of object data, you can easily retrieve points from an ESRI SHP (shape) file in the form of stylized symbols dependent on the value of the attribute data (GIS attribute) of a particular point, resp. the object data of individual points imported into an AutoCAD Map 3D or Civil 3D DWG file.

First, define (e.g. in a separate level) the symbols - blocks in your drawing, named exactly according to the value of the attribute in the loaded GIS data. In our example (from a project by our Finnish colleagues in Arkance Systems), the attribute "Equipmen_6" contains a value identifying the type of equipment being surveyed - e.g. "A", "B" or "CC1". Therefore, we predefine blocks of these names in our DWG.

Now we run the MAPIMPORT command, select the loaded SHP file (with its "accessory files") - Atria_equipment.shp:

and in the subsequent Import dialog, set the mapping of the GIS file attribute data to the Map/Civil object data (OD) and especially mapping the point data to "Get block name from data" (in our case from the "Equipmen_6" data).

Then we finish the import.

The points for which blocks (with the name matching the attribute value) were found, will be shown in the symbolic styling.

(Additional options for stylizing point symbols are provided by the FDO import function.)
