When you insert elements in projects, Revit by default snaps the insertion points to the nearest existing geometry in the project. You can setup this object snap mode under the magnet (horseshoe) icon in the ribbon Manage > Settings > Snap (right click to add it to your Quick Access Toolbar, QAT).

If you want to suppress or restore the snap just temporarily, for a single element, you can also use the keyboard shortcut SO (snap off, suppress), or SS to restore object snaps (end points, intersections, center points, tangents...).
